From Brindisi to Gjadri, Meloni brings Rama 30 more immigrants; debates flare up

The Italian Interior Minister says criminals are being repatriated, but the opposition opposes: "if we talk about criminals, they should be in prison, but these are illegal structures because of the living conditions of the prisoners and the conditions of those who work there"

The navy ship 'Spica' has departed from the port of Brindisi in Italy, carrying 30 immigrants of various nationalities who will be housed at the detention and repatriation center (CPR) in Gjadra.

It seems that this is the first 'gift' that Giorgia Meloni gives to Edi Rama after taking office for the 4th consecutive term as Prime Minister, while debates have flared up in Italy regarding the functioning of CPR centers.

The Gjadra camp currently shelters around 50 people, while the Italian Interior Ministry has announced that 30 migrants who were refused asylum in Italy have been repatriated to their countries of origin, after previously being sheltered in Gjadra.

While the decision of the European Court of Justice is expected in the coming days, the Court of Rome has not recognized the legitimacy of the arrests ordered against migrants rescued in the Mediterranean and transferred to the other side of the Adriatic, because they come from countries that the Italian government considers safe, in particular Egypt and Bangladesh.

"It is not true that we bring there immigrants who are guilty only because they are in a state of administrative irregularity, that is not the case."

"We have repatriated people who were being released from prison after several years for serious crimes, including rape, child pornography and so on," says Italy's Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, about the fourth "transfer" of illegal aliens on Italian territory to the Albanian center awaiting deportation.

Meanwhile, the opposition in Italy continues to oppose the CPR model while demanding their closure.

"They are of no use for the purpose of so-called deterrence, because here you have people who are caught when they get out of prison, locked up for 90 days, and then released with a deportation order, to start the cycle over again."

Or there are people who are found wandering the streets of the country without documents, and they make up the majority.

Sometimes they even have families with children who attend our schools, like a boy born and raised in Italy but kept for days for safety in CPR because he couldn't renew his residence permit.

"In short, if we talk about criminals, they should be in prison, but these are illegal structures due to the living conditions of the prisoners and the conditions of those who work there," said MP and leader of Justice for the Democratic Party, Debora Serraçhiani. She has inspected CPR centers in Italy and in Gjadra.

The Democratic parliamentarian speaks out about dilapidated structures with many closed rooms as they are absolutely unusable and with particular criticism in some of the most sensitive areas.

"We need to intervene as soon as possible," she emphasizes.

But the Minister of Interior emphasizes that "we are in the process of converting the decree-law regarding Albania's CPR."

"After the people were released from detention, we managed to repatriate 30 people.

"These are early days, but we aim to give a boost to functionality," said Matteo Piantedosi.

He emphasized that we have repatriated people who have served prison sentences of several years for serious crimes, including rape, child pornography and so on.

"So we limit only people who pose a social risk to these centers. The center will provide a very important functionality and we are waiting, in the coming months, for the decision of the European Court of Justice and the European rules on this issue in June 2026, to be able to use the rest of the structure," continued Piantedosi. /Pamphlet/
