After a "cleaning campaign" announced with much fanfare by Prime Minister Edi Rama, where municipal leaders, directors and officials came out in a row to hand over office keys, citizens expected a new breath of fresh air in the administration. But what did they get in return? Aida Demin.
While Edi Rama loudly announces the "reform to cleanse" the administration of incompetent and corrupt officials, on the ground the opposite is happening: Aida Demi, a name known not for professional merits, but for involvement in legalization affairs with forged documents, is appointed to the Port of Saranda. Former director of the Cadastre and under "compulsory appearance" security measure, Demi appears today as the new "captain" of the port, turning the reform into a farce where patronageists and those rumored for corruption are promoted, not punished.
It seems that in Albania, instead of being punished, the "rumored" are rewarded. After a "cleansing operation" announced with much fanfare by Prime Minister Edi Rama, where municipal leaders, directors and officials came out in a row to hand over the keys to their offices, citizens expected a new spirit in the administration. But what did they get in return? Aida Demin.
Yes, the same Aida Demi who is involved in a criminal case for legalizing a building with forged documents. Former director of the Saranda Cadastre and previously of the Municipality, she faced the security measure of "compulsory appearance", while her colleagues went under "house arrest". But even this did not prevent her from ascending to the post again, this time as director of the Port of Saranda.
Ironically, a person who has been investigated for land abuse and illegal construction in the sea now has the sea of Saranda in his hands, which he is expected to swallow. Sources on the ground speak of an “administration reconstruction” that looks more like a political reward for loyal militants than a real reform.
Aida Demi, known as one of the most zealous patrons of the Socialist Party in Saranda, seems to have received her reward: an office with a view of the bay, lucrative tenders and many opportunities to... "put things in order" in the port. All this, without competition, without transparency, without a minimum of institutional morality.
Can more be swallowed than that? If before her appointment, Aida Demi, according to the accusations, had built without permission and legalized her own facilities, now she has access to one of the most profitable institutions in Saranda. A story that surpasses even the irony itself: from unauthorized construction to port cargo management.
Perhaps this is the clearest way to understand that in Albania it doesn't matter what you do, but who you know and who your patrons are.
While citizens demand justice, honesty and meritocracy, the scenario is clear, a public performance for the cameras, and behind the scenes, appointments that follow the same closed political and clientelistic circle. Instead of punishing corruption, we have its reorganization into new positions. In Albania, they say that “the wolf changes its coat, but it does not forget its habit”. With Aida Demi, it seems that the wolf has put on the director's costume and taken the helm of the Port.
It seems clear that Edi Rama is openly mocking the intelligence of citizens, especially those of Saranda, by presenting the appointments of individuals rumored for corruption and legal violations as "reform". Instead of a real cleaning of the administration, the same politically exhausted names are being returned to key positions, showing that the government does not aim for justice, but rather to maintain control through patronage and old clientele./In- Front.org
