The sudden drop in temperatures has caught farmers in the hilly area of Lushnja unprepared. Dozens of hectares of vegetables in plastic greenhouses have dried up.
" 25 years of farming. The cold has caused extraordinary damage. We planted 2 acres of tomatoes. The expenses have gone up to almost 5-6 million lek. As you can see here, everything is finished. We have to start from scratch and to start from scratch we need lek. We have no help whatsoever ," says Çlirim Bali, a farmer.
Not just newly planted tomatoes, but also tomatoes that were ready for market.
" In February, this tomato was ready for the market. We worked cleanly, after pesticides, with bees, we introduced bees so that the product would be organic ," he adds to "Report TV".
In addition to the damage from temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius, farmers say that the lack of a market for three years is causing them economic losses.
"We were also burned with cabbage, 5 dunyams of cabbage were not sold, not a single grain was thrown into the canal. It was done to escape at night. This is agriculture in Albania. We haven't received a single lek for 3 years, produce, throw it away. We don't know what to do. The market has been down for over three years ," the farmer emphasizes.
In conditions of total destruction of plants but also of expected production, farmers are uprooting plants to prepare the greenhouse for other crops.
Vegetable and strawberry farmers in Roskovec and Frakull are facing the same situation.
