After the alarm about hazardous waste from Albania, Thailand stops and turns

Thailand has detained and begun procedures to turn back two ships carrying at least 100 containers of 816 tons of suspected industrial waste and some of it toxic.

The two ships of the international trade trust "Maersk", namely "Compton" and "Candor", which were reported by "Bloomberg" and the Thai media that they were transporting dangerous waste of electric steel melting furnaces (Cadmium and Chromium) from Albania to Thailand, have been detained by the Coast Guard and Port Authorities.

It is announced that they will return to Europe, but earlier the Thai authorities and the "Basel Network", a non-governmental organization specialized in the field of protection from toxic waste, said that the ships would be sent to the country of origin, in this case Albania, where it turns out that they were loaded on July 4 at the Port of Durrës, or Italy, where another stop was made afterwards and the cargoes were divided.

The news was published today (August 14), by the Thai media "Bangkok Post" , which referred to the official authorities.

Thailand's Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Wednesday (14 August) that "the last confirmed location of the container ship Maersk Candor was near South Africa last Friday". She was scheduled to arrive in Singapore on August 24, according to him.

The second ship, the Maersk Campton, was scheduled to arrive in Singapore on Thursday (tomorrow).

The two ships were reported to be carrying around 100 containers of EAF powder destined for Laem Chabang Port in Thailand's Chon Buri province, while making stops in Singapore and Malaysia, but not in Africa's Cape Town, as they were not authorised. for one, according to the statement of the "Maersk" company itself. One of them also turned off the GPS signal when it approached the African country on July 31.

This same media specifies that the suspected cargo in 40 containers at "Maersk Campton" will be returned to Italy, also referring to the website of the maritime cargo tracking of "MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company", which will transport the cargo back to Europe.

"Maersk is working with the Singaporean authorities and the shipping line for which it is transporting the containers "to ensure that the containers will be repatriated to Albania in the best possible way," spokeswoman Summer Shi said, referring to the rest of the cargo. .

It contains at least 60 containers on board.

Director General of the Ports Authority of Thailand, Kriengkrai Chaisiriëongsuk, told "Thai PBS" that "there had been no contact with the two ships and no request to visit Thailand."

He emphasized that "Thailand would not accept shipments of waste". Earlier, they stated that "Albania had not notified about the shipments and Thailand has given its disapproval of their arrival after alerts".

Jatuporn Buruspat, permanent secretary for natural resources and environment, said that "The Department of Industrial Affairs had already informed Singapore that Thailand would not accept electric arc furnace dust".

Authorities have been working to stop the shipment since the Basel Action Network, a US-based nonprofit group that tracks the toxic trade, first informed Thailand last week that the containers it believed to be filled with potentially harmful furnace dust with electric arc and that were heading towards her.

Furnace dust, which requires treatment, is a hazardous waste product that usually comes from steel scrap recycling and contains toxic metal oxides such as cadmium and chromium that are harmful to health and the environment.
