Bishop of Sapa, Monsignor Simon Kulli, dies at the age of 52 after suffering

The Bishop of Sapëz, Monsignor Simon Kulli, has passed away at the age of 52 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The Bishop of the Diocese of Sapa, Simon Kulli, has passed away at the age of 52. It is learned that Bishop Simon Kulli suffered a stroke from high blood pressure and passed away suddenly this morning.

Simon Kulli was born on 14.02.1973 in the village of Pistull in the Diocese of Sapa. This village is 20 km from Shkodra. He completed his primary and secondary school in the village of Pistull.

On February 2, 1992, he entered the Albanian Interdiocesan Seminary "Our Lady of Good Counsel" in Shkodra, and completed two years of preparatory work to begin philosophical and theological studies.

In 1994, he began studying Philosophy; two years later, in 1996, he began studying Theology, and on September 14, 1999, he was ordained a deacon in the Cathedral of Shkodra. During his diaconate, from September to January 1999, he served in the Cathedral of Shkodra with the parish priest Dom Lucjan Avgustini, and from January 2000 to June, he served in Dajç of Zadrima with Dom Injac Dema, Vicar General of the Diocese.

On June 29, 2000, he was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Shkodra, along with four other Albanian priests, by Bishop Angelo Massafra. These were the first priestly ordinations to be held after 46 years of communist rule in Albania.

After his priestly ordination, he was immediately appointed to Dajç in Zadrima and served as assistant parish priest to Mons. Injac Dema, and at the same time he was Secretary to the Bishop of the Diocese of Sapa, at that time, Monsignor Dodë Gjergjit. He served in Dajç from 2000 to 2002.

In 2002, Dom Simoni was appointed Diocesan Chancellor of Sapa.

From 2006 to the present day, he has served as the Parish Priest of the Cathedral “St. Teresa of Calcutta” – Vau-Dejës. From 2001 to 2012, he served as the Director of the Diocesan Caritas of Sapa. From 2010 to May 25, he served as the Delegate of the Diocesan Caritas, as well as the Vicar General and Finance Officer of the Diocese of Sapa.

With the passing of the bishop, His Grace Lucjan Avustini, on May 25, 2016, Dom Simon Kulli was elected by the Council of Consultants as "Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Sapa".
