Analyst Ben Andoni has commented on the issue of the arrest of the elected mayor in Himara, Fredi Beleri, where a protest has been announced today after the latter's term of office expires.
In an interview for "Panorama TV" he said that the name of the mayor Beleri is well known for the massacre of Peshkopia, but the Greek side continues to support him and intervene in the Albanian justice, which put him behind bars under the accusation of vote buying.
According to him, Albanian justice is the one that should dot the i's and Greece should respect the latter's decisions, where he added that another important issue between the parties is the sea agreement, where Albania should have a extraordinary preparation and protect it properly.
Excerpts from the conversation:
Today the term of the oath ends, while protests have been announced today. How do you see this?
It is evidently a symmetry of the Greek authorities towards Albania, but also the fact that Himara faces many problems with properties, which has caused not only irregularities but also the consequences for the residents. Beleri is a very talked about person, his name is connected with the Peshkopia massacre, but justice did not reach the end and the Greek authorities did not help Albania when they were asked for information. The decisions of a state's justice must be respected.
Are the rights of the Albanian side being respected?
They are absolutely not even taken into account today, you know that the mayor of Athens will also be at the protest today, it is not normal and it is completely unreasonable. Even the obstacles and the pressure that is being put on our country for candidacies. Apparently the municipality of Himara will go to the elections, but the Albanian justice has the biggest burden of proof, as it is claimed that Beleri was caught in the act and if there is evidence, all arguments will be rejected. The Greek side must respect some democratic canons, even this kind of pressure will fade over time. Greece always demands concessions from us, we have an open sea agreement.
Regarding the sea agreement, there is a big problem, it will go to the international court. I wish that Albania has the right lawyers to defend itself, as Greece has quite good specialists and one of the best fleets, even in the Arbitration part, some of the lawyers are Greek or of Greek origin. This is an arbitration of great proportions and requires tremendous preparation. It is a pity that the agreement that Greece has made with Italy has lasted 40 years, while Albania is as close to it as a swimmer can swim. The strange thing is why it does not put pressure on Turkey.
Beler's candidacy was wrong.
