The United States Embassy in Tirana has notified American citizens in our country to be cautious of the protest called by the opposition on Friday.
In the official announcement, the embassy asks American citizens to avoid unnecessary movement in the area where the rally will be held, as the opposition protest expected to be held on February 20 could escalate into violence, as has happened in the past.
“A demonstration is scheduled for Friday, February 20, 2026, at 6:00 PM. Protesters plan to gather near the Prime Minister’s Office building, which is located on Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, between Mother Teresa Square and Skanderbeg Square. An increased police presence, road closures, and traffic disruptions are expected in the hours leading up to and during the protest. State Police have warned that protesters may block intersections in various parts of the city center. U.S. Embassy personnel are advised to avoid the demonstration. Monitor local media and follow the instructions of local law enforcement authorities for the latest information.
Although protests and large gatherings often begin peacefully, the situation can change quickly. Protests may spread to other nearby government buildings and blocks, causing traffic disruptions, detours, and road closures. Our general guidance is to avoid protest areas. If you are in the city, please remain vigilant and prioritize your personal safety,” the US Embassy said in a statement.
