The civic protest, which has entered its ninth day, seems to be producing not only street mobilization, but also ambitions for political organization. Student and activist Laura Kërtalli stated that the movement is aiming to transform into a new opposition force, independent of existing parties.
In an interview for the Off the Record show on A2 CNN, Kërtalli said that the protest has seen a continuous increase in both participation and opposition spirit, and according to her, it has now surpassed the initial cause related to the project in Zvërnec.
" The most important thing this protest has achieved is that it has overthrown the government's propaganda for 80-odd mandates and the idea that the majority represents the majority of Albanians. We are seeing every day that there are thousands of citizens gathered, that there is a real opposition in Albania. Maybe we are not yet organized into a single force, but day by day we have seen growth both in numbers and in spirit. This is a key point that can be concretized into something much bigger ," she said.
According to the activist, one of the main goals of the movement is to create a new political alternative, away from the influence of traditional parties.
" As students, we are trying to mobilize and build an opposition force that is not influenced by the current political parties. We think that the time has come for young people to take responsibility and create a new alternative, because the existing parties have failed to provide solutions. This protest has shown that there is energy and will to build something different from what we have seen so far ," said Kërtalli.
She added that the first step will be organizing students and discussing the forms of political representation that could emerge from this movement.
" The first step is to organize students and discuss our ideas for the future. It is an ambitious idea, but we believe that we can build a large opposition force. We have been the strongest opposition voice in these days of protests and we think that this energy can be transformed into a more structured movement. The goal is to create a new alternative, independent of the influences of the political past ," she declared.
According to Kërtalli, the long-term objective is for this movement to transform into a political force that can also compete in elections.
" Our long-term objective is a force with democratic ideals, independent and unaffected by old political interests. If our demand for Edi Rama's resignation is not realized through protest, this does not mean that we will stop. On the contrary, we will continue to organize and mobilize even more. The dissatisfaction exists and we will continue to represent it until the end ," said the student.
The statements come at a time when the civic protest is showing signs of expansion and is being accompanied by calls not only against the government, but also against the traditional opposition and the entire political class.
