The Italy-Albania axis for migrant management has been put to the third test, since the moment the refugee camp in Gjadra, established after the agreement between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Edi Rama, became operational.
The Navy patrol ship Cassiopea has arrived in the Albanian port of Shëngjin, carrying 49 migrants rescued over the weekend in international waters south of Lampedusa. They will undergo expedited border procedures.
The rescued migrants are mainly from Bangladesh, but also from Egypt, Ivory Coast and Gambia.
These places are considered safe according to the list contained in the Meloni government decree.
The process is the same as that followed in recent months for other groups of migrants: the first stop is inside the port, where an "Italian" hotspot has been set up for health checks.
People deemed vulnerable will be returned to Italy. After identification, other migrants will be transferred to the Gjader camp, inland from Albania, a few dozen kilometers away. Then, the judges of the Court of Appeal of the Capital, within 48 hours, must decide whether or not to confirm the detention measure.
This is the third transfer to Albania after those last October and November carried out by the ship Libra: in that case the asylum seekers were later released because the Rome court had not confirmed the detentions.
This is due to the inability to recognize the countries of origin of the detainees as safe countries and as a result of the postponement of the European Court of Justice's decision on the issue of safe countries, which is expected on February 25.
This time, based on the new legislation requested by the government, the judges of the Rome Court of Appeal (and not those of the Immigration Section) will decide within 48 hours whether to validate the ban or not. Therefore, the answer should be available by Thursday. / Pamphlet /
