Road accidents increased by 29.6% in 2024, mainly due to driver behavior

The past year has been a year of setbacks in road safety, with accidents marking a dramatic increase of 29.6 percent compared to January-December 2023.

Official data from the Institute of Statistics regarding road accidents indicate that in December 2024 alone, there were 149 road accidents, of which 192 were accidents (killed and injured, although these figures are being updated).

During the period January-December 2024, the mortality rate in road accidents is 10.5 per 100 accidents, down from 14.9 in the same period a year earlier.

The main cause of accidents in 2024 appears to continue to be driver behavior with an increase of 33.2 percent, but it appears that pedestrian behavior, although with a lower weight, has still increased by 6.9 percent compared to the previous year.

"Road accidents, in 89.3% of cases, occurred as a result of the driver's behavior. The highest number of accidents, in this period, was committed by the age groups 0-24 and 25-34 years old, each accounting for 24.2% of the total number of accidents.

In December 2024, the highest number of road accidents occurred on Tuesday, with 20.1%, while the lowest number of accidents occurred on Friday, with 10.1%.

"The highest number of road accidents occurred during the time frame 08:00-12:00, accounting for 26.2% of the total number of road accidents ," the INSTAT publication states./ Monitor
