The drugs that a criminal organization brought to Italy from Albania were stored at the Sprar center (System for the Protection of Asylum Seekers and Refugees, now the extraordinary reception center) in Rome, on Via della Riserva Nuova.
This emerged from an international anti-drug operation conducted today, February 19, by the Carabinieri, where 27 people were arrested.
Drugs stored in the migrant center
20 people were placed under house arrest and 7 were placed under house arrest. The operation was carried out between Italy, Albania and Spain. The orders were carried out by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Rome at the request of the DDA.
Some of the arrests were made in Vlora and the province of Barcelona in cooperation with local authorities. The 27 people are accused, to varying degrees, of illegal drug trafficking, illegal sale and possession for the purpose of trafficking, extortion, possession of firearms and fictitious registration of assets in competition by deceiving public officials.
According to investigators, the migrant center was used not only to store drugs, but also to recruit Nigerian immigrants, holders of temporary residence permits, while they awaited the determination of their status.
According to the investigation, a group of Albanians imported large quantities of marijuana directly from Vlora (Albania), then distributed it, thanks to an alliance with Nigerian organizations, at the national and European level with a tested and efficient system. The drugs were also transported by public transport.
