The Basel network official letter to the Godfather: Test the hazardous waste

The Basel network has sent an official letter to the Ministry of Environment regarding the 102 containers with toxic waste that have come out of the Port of Durrës.

The Basel network calls on the Albanian authorities to test the suspected hazardous waste, which is being returned to the Port of Durrës.

"It is critical to the health of Albania's citizens and environment, as well as to the rule of international law, that containers are tested to determine if they contain hazardous waste, as suspected, so that appropriate action can be taken. We are concerned that failure to implement a "The well-executed plan to sample suspected waste will lead to conspiracy theories, lack of transparency, and misinformation that will help no one ," the Basel Network's letter to Kumbaro said.

According to the Basel Network, if the containers contain hazardous materials, then they could not have been sent to another country without the written consent of the exporting country Albania, the transit countries of Italy, Malta, Morocco, South Africa and Singapore, as well as the importing country of Thailand.

This, according to them, raises reasonable suspicions that we are dealing with an international 'illegal traffic' of toxic waste.

"No consent was given by any of these countries and therefore if the containers were shown to contain hazardous waste, then the shipments were 'illegal traffic' under Article 9 of the Basel Convention. Illegal traffic is a criminal offence. Further, if containers contain hazardous waste in particulate form, this raises a serious question as to why they were allowed to be exposed to wind and rain in the port, given the risks of serious environmental and human health impacts" .

Following BAN's warnings, Singapore and Thailand refused to complete the shipments, so Maersk and MSC have joined efforts to return the 102 containers.
