The speech given by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to the UN Security Council, has become the cause of a clash between Prime Minister Rama and the Russian ambassador to the UN.
The Russian ambassador, Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya, threatened that if the floor was given to Zelensky in front of other members of the UN, there would be consequences for Albania as president of the Council.
According to him, priority cannot be given to Ukraine, and something like this constitutes a violation of the UN regulation and consequently makes Albania also guilty of the violation as the leader of the meeting.
" We do not believe that the arguments you presented to us are convincing. I wanted you to explain to us why priority was given to the president of Ukraine. For example the president of Somalia spoke first but was the only one present. If you do this then you will face infringing practices.
Members of the SC have heard these words of Zelensky through video messages. Here there is a flagrant violation of the president's trip to come here and speak, it is seen as a privilege instead of which during the last session the representative of Kiev decided to speak through a video message. Zelensky left last year due to circumstances, but this has prevented him from traveling to the USA.
This offense has risks in SC because it risks turning into a show. Today will be more of a spectacle. We do not oppose the participation of Zelensky, but it should be done according to the rules. Those who are not member countries should speak behind the member countries. The Albanian presidency has shown flagrant violations. Albania could not keep such a thing today ", said the Russian representative.
