The United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee is holding a hearing on a series of diplomatic nominations and senior positions at the State Department. Among the nominees in this hearing where senators will consider candidacies for ambassadors is Eric Wendt of California, proposed for the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to the Republic of Albania.
The chairman of the committee, US Senator James Risch, speaking before the nominated candidates for ambassadors, stated that the partnership between the United States and Albania has marked a significant increase and that Albania remains an important ally of the US and NATO.
Senator Risch said that Albania plays a key role in ensuring stability in the Western Balkans, while praising our country for its stance against Russian influence.
Senator Risch emphasized that it is vital that the US continues its support for Albania, especially in implementing the governmental and economic reforms that the country has undertaken.
“ Mr. Went, the United States’ partnership with Albania has benefited from significant growth in recent years and today more than ever. Albania is an important NATO ally, helping to ensure stability in the Western Balkans and counter Russian influence. It is very important that the United States continues to support Albania’s implementation of the governmental and economic reforms it has undertaken, which in turn will increase the opportunities for even greater cooperation,” said Senator Risch.
Then, Senator Jeanne Shaheen took the floor and also stated that Albania remains a key US ally in the Balkans. She emphasized that if Went is elected ambassador, he will be the first in three years in Albania. The Senator stated that in the period we are in, the appointment of an American ambassador to Tirana is very important.
"Mr. Went has been nominated to serve as ambassador to Albania. And again, as the chairman said, Albania is one of our closest partners in the Western Balkans, it is a NATO ally and has stood by us in many ways. It has also supported Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. If confirmed, you will be the first U.S. ambassador to Albania in three years, at a time of particular importance for the region. Diplomatic leadership matters," the senator said.
Senate hearings are part of the constitutional process of confirming presidential appointments to US diplomacy and the federal administration.
We recall that the appointments of David Brat as ambassador to Australia, Michael Kavoukjian as ambassador to Norway, and Michelle Steel as ambassador to South Korea are also being reviewed in this session.
