The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, said on Wednesday that the oil discovered in Albania is "of a very high quality, similar to the premium of Saudi Arabia".
Speaking at a press conference on August 23, Rama said that drilling has reached 6,000 meters deep into the ground after 10 years of work in the Shpirag area, about five kilometers from Albania's central city, Berat.
"The reserve is there, at 6,002 meters deep underground. "The reserve has been affected after a very difficult exploration and a massive investment made due to the repeated breakage of the probes, as a result of the geological formation," said Rama.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the water has not yet been encountered, which means that, according to him, the amount of oil will be large.
"According to the analyzes done in the Netherlands by the SHELL company, it is oil of the same quality as the premium oil of Saudi Arabia", he emphasized.
Searches for oil in the area of Shpirag in Berat are being carried out by the SHELL company. More than 15 wells are expected to be opened. The Albanian Prime Minister said that, in parallel, oil exploration will be done in the area of Dumre in Divjaka.
Prime Minister Rama predicted that this discovery will bring a "great economic and financial benefit", and that the total investment in the oil reserves will reach seven billion euros.
"This wealth will have an impact on pensions, the education system, health, and the well-being of our children," Rama underlined.
He announced that between the end of October and the end of December, there will be a public result from the SHELL company itself regarding the creation of the infrastructure for oil extraction. According to him, when the production starts, there will be more than 5,000 employees.
Although rich in oil reserves, Albania has no oil processing industry. The extracted oil is processed outside Albania and then imported and distributed in the local market, at a price that turns out to be the most expensive in the region. Currently, a liter of diesel costs more than 190 Lek or 1.90 Euro./REL
