The dispatch of firefighting forces to Greece to help put out the fires has calmed the waters between Athens and Albania.
The Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has thanked Albania for the troops and firefighting equipment it sent to assist with the fires in the country.
"Our thanks go to Albania, which sent 48 firefighters and 9 vehicles to Greece to join us in fighting the fires in Alexandroupolis. Thank you Albania." , writes the Greek Prime Minister.
We remind you that this morning two firefighting vehicles and 9 employees of the firefighting service left Maliqi and Korça for Alexandropol. But, after staying for several hours at the entrance of the city of Bilisht, they turned back. According to the statements, the reason was that the needs were met from other countries, where large areas of forests but also housing, including a protected area in which a monastery was located, were engulfed by massive fires yesterday.
A few hours later, Gekia apparently repented and asked for help from Albania. The Ministry of Defense has announced that 9 fire engines and 48 firefighters will now go to the neighboring country.
According to reports, it was learned that it was the Minister of Defense Vassilis Kikilias who requested help through the Albanian ambassador in Athens, Luela Hajdaraga to avoid the mechanism of the European Union due to bureaucracy. She called Minister Niko Peleshi to bilaterally agree on the launch of six fire engines, fire brigades and support personnel.
It is expected that the vehicles will pass before midnight at the border point of Kapshtica and will be deployed in the area of Alexandrupol to participate in firefighting operations in this area.
