In the first 5 months of this year, the Border Police and Frontex have apprehended 472 irregular migrants. They enter Albania mainly in the south-east of the country, from Korça and Gjirokastra.
Official data provided by the Border and Migration Department of the State Police show that compared to the same period a year ago, the number of refugees coming to our country from the Middle East and North Africa is decreasing.
In the first five months of 2024, 562 people were caught. In other words, this year the number of illegal immigrants coming from third countries such as Syria and Morocco and entering Albanian territory through Greece has decreased by 90 cases.
"Although the number of illegal immigrants coming to our country is decreasing, the flows show that Albania continues to be considered a "transit country". This is due to the fact that a very small number of them seek asylum in our country, and despite this, they still do not wait until the procedures are completed, but leave for EU countries", reports the A2 CNN journalist.
Some of the irregular migrants caught in Albanian territory are also minors. In the annual report published by the Consultative Forum of Frontex, the European border surveillance agency, it is stated that in our country, minors are kept in the same reception center as adults. And for this reason, the report quotes, it has been requested that a reception center be established in Albania only for minors.
