The preliminary hearing against former mayor Erion Veliaj has been postponed again. It is learned that the reason was the absence of one of the lawyers, while the next hearing will be held on November 12th.
Meanwhile, the special court legitimized Veliaj's new lawyer, Artan Gjermeni, who requested time to familiarize himself with the documents. Veliaj himself did not attend the hearing, while the court decided that subsequent hearings will be every Monday.
Today's session will review the criminal charges against Veliaj, who has been behind bars since February 10, and will decide whether or not the case against the former mayor will go to trial.
We recall that the previous session was postponed due to the lawyers' boycott over the detention of lawyer Ulian Barjami, after a clash with the prosecutor in the courtroom, an event that occurred at the Elbasan Court. We recall that on Thursday, October 2, the High Court rejected Erion Veliaj's appeal, which requested the replacement of the personal security measure "prison arrest" with a milder measure.
According to the SPAK investigative file, Veliaj is accused of being involved in several cases of corruption, money laundering, failure to declare assets, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into the cell.
His wife Ajola Xoxa also faces charges of passive corruption, as well as money laundering, undeclared assets, and concealment of income.
Veliaj is also waging a legal battle after being dismissed from the post of mayor of Tirana on September 25, while the Constitutional Court suspended his dismissal and blocked early elections in Tirana.
