Protests in Tirana

While the protests of the past two weeks have dominated the political debate in Albania, an unexpected effect is emerging abroad. They have put Albania at the center of discussions in the international travel community.

On Reddit, one of the world's largest online forums and a widely used source for travel recommendations by tourists, questions about Albania have increased significantly in recent days. With tourists from all over the world seeking information about upcoming destinations, from "Is it still safe to travel to Albania?" to "What's happening in Tirana?" and "Should I cancel my trip?", the protests have become one of the main topics for those planning to visit the country.

But what stands out are not just the questions. It's the answers.

In online discussions, tourists currently in Albania, visitors who have just finished their vacations, and local residents give almost the same assessment: the protests are not affecting the tourist experience.

"Absolutely 100% safe. This is not a violent protest," one user wrote.

"I'm here now and everything is absolutely fine," replies another.

"It's very safe. These are the most peaceful protests in the history of this country," another user comments.

The most repeated advice for tourists is practical, not alarmist, and concerns avoiding the boulevard during protest hours to avoid being blocked by crowds or traffic.

"The protests are in the late afternoon, after people get off work. Just avoid the boulevard at that time and you'll be fine," one commenter wrote.

Some of the comments go even further, describing the atmosphere as more festive than confrontational. “I saw a lot of tourists protesting with us today. Please come, you'll love it,” writes one participant.

"You'd want to join the protest if you saw it. It's more like a party," adds another.

An Australian tourist, who said he had accidentally found himself among the protesters in Tirana, described the experience as "very peaceful", while adding that "the whole place has been absolutely wonderful".

Another commenter, who was in Albania at the time of the discussion, wrote: “I just traveled here, it’s very quiet.” While another user summed up the situation with the words “More than safe, with respect from Albania.”

In the same conversation, a tourist asked if he should be concerned about a two-day trip to Albania. The answer he received was that the main risk was not related to security, but to traffic and crowds in the area where the protests were taking place.

“There might be a little more traffic at most,” one commenter wrote. “Just try not to visit the monuments on the boulevard during the protest.”

In other comments, some users reported being near the protests. “I saw a protest in Tirana and it didn’t seem like there was any danger,” wrote one commenter. “I’m in Tirana right now and everything is perfectly fine. I saw the protest, but it’s not violent, it’s just a peaceful protest,” added another./Monitor
