The Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime has again left Fredi Beleri in prison, rejecting his request for the replacement of the security measure.
Beleri had asked for a milder security measure. But the jury did not accept this request and left Fredi Beleri in the cell again.
Fredi Beleri is accused of buying votes in Himare for the May 14 local elections.
Beleri has not yet been sworn in, while Greece has threatened Albania that it will block any EU funding and the country's European course if the elected mayor of Himara is not allowed to be sworn in.
Fredi Beleri is arrested for the May 14 elections. Special investigative actions revealed that on the eve of the voting day, he was involved in the vote-buying scheme.
The money was paid by his associate to the citizen who was told that for this work he would be rewarded with 300 euros and the court has so far refused Beler's request to swear and to leave the cell.
Fredi Beleri has been in custody since May 12 of this year after he was arrested for buying the votes of 8 citizens for 40,000 lek.
On July 15, Beleri lost the battle with Albanian justice to leave the cell. The Supreme Court overthrew Fredi Beleri, leaving in effect the prison sentence given by the Special Court of Appeal.
Fredi Beleri, who won the local elections, was arrested on May 12, on suspicion of passive corruption in the election carried out in cooperation.
Other courts have rejected his request to be released in 5 cases, while for the first time this security measure will be examined in the Supreme Court.
Two days before the local elections on May 14, Beleri was arrested under the charge of active corruption in the elections or vote buying. A person cooperated with the police and the prosecutor's office of Vlora to document the fact of the charge, he was provided with the necessary logistics, since the registrar .
The infiltrator managed to get the sum of 40 thousand new lek in search of 8 votes in favor of Beler. Beleri was declared the winner by the cell in the election, but his oath was never taken to take office.
His arrest has provoked the reaction of Athens, which insists on his release, stating that his arrest has political connections. Even the Greek MEP, Manolis Kefalogianis, at the same time the Chairman of the EU-Albania Joint Stabilization-Association Committee who visited the city of Himara yesterday (July 18, 2023) demanded the release of the elected mayor Fredi Beleri.
