Lawyers: This is an illegal tactic by the prosecution to suggest to the public the guilt of Mr. Veliaj
Tirana's lawyers, Erion Veliaj, have reacted sharply to the news that appeared in the media today that SPAK will take the accused mayor tomorrow. According to them, it has never been seen or heard that the media is informed a day before the accused himself.
According to them, the repeated and illegal disclosure of information that constitutes an investigative secret on Mr. Veliaj's case has continued without interruption since the day of his arrest, in a deliberate attempt to prejudice him.
" Notifying the media or obtaining information from the media before the person under investigation, Mr. Veliaj, himself, is further proof of the fact that this is an illegal tactic by the prosecution to suggest to the public the guilt of Mr. Veliaj ," they say.

We are deeply concerned that the practice of leaking information about the proceedings of Mr. Veliaj's criminal case continues even in the circumstances of a presumed meeting to be held tomorrow between his lawyers and SPAK. The media's notification or the media's receipt of information before the person under investigation, Mr. Veliaj, himself, is further evidence of the fact that this is an illegal tactic by the prosecution to suggest to the public Mr. Veliaj's guilt.
The repeated and unlawful disclosure of information constituting an investigative secret on the case of Mr. Veliaj has continued without interruption since the day of his arrest, in a deliberate attempt to prejudice him. The failure to initiate any criminal proceedings by the Special Prosecution for the commission of the criminal offense provided for in Article 295/a (“Disclosure of secret acts or data”) of the Criminal Code, clearly demonstrates the cooperation of this body in the commission of this criminal offense.
As we have learned from the "SPAK" media, the announcement of the indictment and the conclusion of the investigation by SPAK are expected tomorrow, 163 days after Mr. Veliaj's arrest, giving him the first opportunity to properly examine and challenge the charges brought against him, to analyze the prosecution's evidence, and to present evidence and legal arguments in his defense.
Mr. Veliaj strongly denies any accusation of wrongdoing and continues to emphasize his belief that the prolonged, unreasonable, unnecessary and disproportionate detention is to the grave detriment not only of his constitutional rights as a citizen of this country, but also to the grave detriment of the citizens of Tirana who have elected the city government and of the city of Tirana itself, which has an immediate need to be governed by an elected mayor.
