Former Minister of Health, Ilir Beqaj, has appeared in court as part of the process for the file known as "Sterilization", where he has objected to the procedures followed against him.
During the hearing, Beqaj read several articles of the Constitution, the Convention, and the Code of Criminal Procedure, claiming that they were not applied in his case.
"I have not yet been informed of the new charges, neither in writing nor orally, if you want, we can open the audio of the hearing," he is reported to have said in court. "It seems that the prosecutors' goal is to convict Ilir Beqaj, no matter what the charges," Beqaj said.
On the other hand, his lawyers have claimed that SPAK has not yet clarified the criminal offense, following the suggestion given by the judge of the previous session. According to them, the charge against Beqaj was changed from "abuse of office committed in collaboration" to "theft by abusing office within the framework of a structured criminal group", without being properly formalized.
Ilir Beqaj was arrested on July 4, 2024, by order of SPAK and decision of the GJKKO, as part of the investigation into SASPAC funds. In addition to this issue, he is also accused of granting sterilization concessions in the health system.
For more than a year, the former minister has been in detention in Durrës. Meanwhile, a few days ago, the GJKKO concluded the judicial review for the other eight defendants in this case and announced that the verdict will be announced on March 4, at 3:00 PM.
