Tensions and debates have accompanied the next court session at the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC) against former President Ilir Meta and his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, where SPAK continued its submissions in the preliminary phase of the process.
Before the start of the hearing, Monika Kryemadhi reacted with ironic tones to the accusations raised by the Special Prosecution Office, stating that SPAK has also taken her plastic surgeries as evidence for the money laundering charge.
After the end of the hearing, Ilir Meta's defense attorney, Kujtim Cakrani, gave a long statement to the media, where he shed light on the dynamics of developments within the courtroom and the debates with the prosecutors in the case.
" There were debates with the prosecutors regarding the report and the accusations they raised in the request for trial. Since they are unclear in their accusations, we often stood up and debated with them ," said Cakrani.
According to him, the debates aimed to clarify the basic elements of the accusation, so that the court could understand what was at stake.
" The debate was to clarify the persons and places, so that the court understands what is at stake, because to date, in the submissions that ended today, even the court has not understood anything. We have been following the prosecutor's report, we have asked and made some clarifications, and this has been the reason for the entire debate ," the lawyer declared.
Cakrani emphasized that the clashes were not personal or offensive, but directly related to the content of the accusations.
" The debate has been constructive, it's not that we were insulted by the prosecutors. But the problem lies when the prosecutors report and at the end say 'this is our opinion'. At that moment, we as lawyers are forced to debate ," he said.
He added that the prosecutors in the case are in difficulty, as, according to the defense, there are no elements of a criminal offense.
" Today I understand Mr. Kllapi and Mr. Kraja, they are in a difficulty, because there is no accusation as they claim, there are no criminal offenses and this will undoubtedly be dropped in the future ," said Cakrani, adding that in any case, the ongoing process will evaluate this.
The lawyer confirmed that the defense has not yet presented its full position and that legal claims will be presented at the next hearing.
" Today the prosecutors have finished. Only one lawyer of a lady has spoken. In the next session we will make our objections, claims for inadmissibility and invalidity according to Article 332 of the Code of Criminal Procedure ," he declared, guaranteeing that the public will be informed about every step of the defense.
Cakrani also emphasized that Ilir Meta will continue to be transparent with public opinion.
" We have been open and will continue to be open, because Mr. Meta must be open with the public. He has always been transparent and will continue to clarify this issue ," the lawyer said.
Asked about the issue of appealing to the Constitutional Court, Cakrani expressed strong criticism of the delays, describing the scheduling of the session for April 8 as problematic.
" We expected that issue to be discussed within this month. The date of April 8 is very far away, almost nine months from the complaint we made ," he said.
" This is a disaster that no longer has any logic. You file the request today and after nine months a hearing is scheduled, while the case may have already passed to the merits trial. This is our Constitutional Court. I have no more words ," declared Cakrani, adding that the defense has its reservations, but will try to maintain objectivity in public statements.
The next session is expected to be decisive, as the defense will officially present its objections to the charges and SPAK's request to move the case to trial on the merits.
