A former Boston police officer who claimed she was wrongfully fired after her colleagues made inappropriate remarks about her sex life has been awarded $1 million in damages in a lawsuit.
But the jury was not convinced that the harassment had anything to do with her dismissal and decided that she was simply not at work.
Albanian Enxhi Qirici, 32, was fired from the Boston Police Department (BPD) in 2019 after allegedly confronting and assaulting other officers on two separate occasions, according to the department.
But Qirici sued the BPD in 2021, claiming that her firing was an act of retaliation and that she had experienced sexual harassment and relentless discrimination at work, according to the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts.
On Tuesday, the jury concluded that the woman was targeted because she was dating a black man and that leadership allowed "derogatory, sexist and racist remarks" to be made against her, the filing states.
"This case is about justice and equality," Qiric's lawyer, Ilir Kavaja, said in court, according to The Boston Globe.
Amid the unpleasant interactions, Qirici, who was still in her one-year probationary period, which applies to all new officers, was involved in two incidents that ultimately led to her dismissal.
The first was in July 2018.
But the situation took a dramatic turn when she started yelling at a Northeastern University police officer who confronted her about illegally parking her car several times.
According to Qiric's dismissal letter, she cursed at the other officer. She admitted that her behavior was inappropriate, but claimed that he was being rude to her.
Her second stroke came about a month later when she and the officer were stationed together. During their vacation, they traveled to Boston's Logan International Airport to handle a personal matter involving her mother.
