The Mother Teresa University Hospital Center and the Ministry of Health continue to remain silent regarding the scandal of the power outage in the central resuscitation service. Despite requests for information, the QSUT directorate does not provide any explanation as to why on the evening of January 19, the generators failed to turn on after the power outage.
It is learned that for 20 years, three sources of electricity have been installed in the largest hospital center in the country, where in case of serious defects, other lines are activated, so as not to leave the operating room and intensive therapy without power as happened on Monday, January 19. But even on this issue, the technical directorate of the QSUT does not provide explanations as to why the other lines were not activated, and are they really in working condition?
It is reported that the generator maintenance contract has ended at the end of 2025 and that there is currently no company to provide backup power in case of breakdown. The same sources say that companies that win the tender for the maintenance of generators in hospitals, and especially in the QSUT, have a legal obligation to test the readiness of these backup devices once a month. This procedure was not carried out even when the maintenance company was within the terms of the contract with the QSUT.
After the scandal of turning off the lights in the intensive care unit, in the resuscitation service, the QSUT directorate rushed to distribute a press statement emphasizing that the lives of the patients were not endangered. But in fact, the doctors, nurses and family members of the patients who were in the resuscitation and cardiology services know very well what tension they went through on the evening of January 19, to save the lives of 30 intubated or intensive care patients, where every second of darkness was a threat to life.
As the head of resuscitation, Krenar Lilaj, also indicated, intensive care patients, especially intubated patients, were transported, in a hurry, one by one, with portable respirators to the cardiology service, which fortunately did not have a power outage.
Only after the power was restored and OSHE provided a guarantee to repair the damage, patients returned to the intensive care units.
The Directorate of the QSUT has the responsibility to explain to the public why this institution of special importance left intensive care patients without light and oxygen for 30 minutes. The merits of the doctors and nurses in this case do not belong to the leaders of the QSUT. The latter must not only bear responsibility for the scandal, but also ensure that the lives of patients in the hospital cannot be left in the hands of fate or God./ A2CNN
