The leaders of two Albanian gangs, Elvis Demçe and Ermal Arapaj, have been definitively convicted by the Court of Cassation in Italy, putting an end to the bloody war between them that had begun on the outskirts of Rome.
Prosecutor Francesco Cascini's investigations led to the destruction of this criminal network, with a total of over 100 years in prison for 11 defendants.
Elvis Demçe was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Ermal Arapaj was sentenced to 10 years and 2 months. The two were rivals in a fight for control of drug trafficking areas in Castelli Romani, a fight that also included assassinations, arson and attempted murder.
Demce, also known for his declaration: “I am God,” after his release from prison in 2020, launched a fierce offensive to regain control of the territories that rivals had seized during his absence. Armed and surrounded by trusted men including a former Lazio footballer and an aristocrat’s son turned hitman, he had links to international organized crime, including the ‘Ndrangheta, Colombian traffickers and corrupt port officials.
Demçe was sentenced to 18 years in prison in a summary procedure in Italy, following drug trafficking charges. While Ermal Arapaj, another underworld figure, was sentenced to 16 years.
The two leaders of rival organizations who were fighting for drug trafficking territories between Rome, Acilia and Velletri, often under threat of weapons and ambushes. The Court of Cassation has reduced Elvis Demçe's sentence by 3 years, while Ermal Arapaj has received a 6-year reduction.
Demçe, who has been rumored to have ties to the notorious Italian Camorra group, had labeled himself: "I am God."
Arapaj, known as 'Ufo', boss of a rival gang and former friend of Demça, taking advantage of the latter's periods of imprisonment, attempted to steal his drug trafficking territories.
