SPAK charges/ GJKKO appoints panel that will try Veliaj and 10 others

The GJKKO appoints the panel that will try Veliaj and 10 others. The electronic draw was held this Tuesday, May 5, to select the panel that will examine the case against Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, his wife Ajola Xoxa, as well as 10 other defendants who have not requested a summary trial.

According to the draw, at the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC), the case will be examined by a panel composed of Elsa Ulliri as the presiding judge, as well as judges Flora Hajredini and Besmir Stroka.

We recall that during the April 27 session, the court decided to divide the file into two parts, after accepting the request of 11 defendants for a shortened trial. Among them are businessman Elman Abule and former MP Klotilda Bushka.

Meanwhile, the requests submitted by Erion Veliaj's defense were previously rejected by the court. His lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, has raised concerns that the file includes about 35 files with digital evidence (CDs and USBs), which, according to him, were not opened or reviewed during the preliminary phase.

The mafia call center/ How did the Tirana-based "company" that robbed Greeks function?

The unprecedented organization of a telephone fraud network, with such a complex and extensive internal structure (with 450 employees), which would only fit into a large joint-stock company, is the element that makes the case of an Albanian call center chain quite special. An indicator of the complexity that characterizes the structure of this criminal network is the fact that it took law enforcement authorities two full years of in-depth investigation to dismantle the organization and arrest at least 10 suspects.
The fraud network, from its base in Tirana, had extended its activity to various countries in Europe, including Greece, Protothema writes in an article.

Although Europol and Eurojust do not make public details, such as the real number of people who fell victim to telephone fraud for cryptocurrency investments, large profits, etc., it is certain that a significant portion of the 50 million euros that the Albanian network benefited from comes from the bank accounts of defrauded Greek citizens.

The scammers' method of operation is typical and, paradoxically, very familiar, so it remains incomprehensible how victims continue to fall prey: the target's mobile phone rings. A number appears on the screen, either Greek (with the code +30) or from another reliable country, such as Belgium or Britain. In reality, the call is made from Tirana. A polite voice introduces itself as a representative of a multinational investment advisory company. It promises immediate and large profits, above all safe.

Martyrs' Day of the Homeland/ Begaj and Rama pay homage at the "Mother Albania" memorial

Tributes were paid to the Martyrs of the Homeland at the "Mother Albania" memorial in Tirana.
Prime Minister Edi Rama and President Bajram Begaj laid wreaths of flowers near the memorial at the Martyrs' Cemetery, commemorating the sacrifice of those who fell for the country.

Martyrs' Day is associated with May 5, 1942, when Qemal Stafa, who became one of the symbolic figures of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, was killed. Until the end of World War II, the Albanian state did not have a defined legal status for martyrs.

After the liberation, on August 28, 1945, Law No. 109 “On the Compensation of Families of Martyrs and Invalids of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War” was passed. This act also provided support for the families of patriots who fell in previous periods, including the National Renaissance and the wars for independence.

What is expected/ Rama gathers SP leaders in the regions

Prime Minister Edi Rama has called a meeting, at the SP headquarters, with political leaders in the regions. The meeting is related to the "Works of Albania" tour, which Prime Minister Rama launched a few weeks ago, in meetings with SP structures, but also with different layers of society.

It is learned that at this meeting the Prime Minister is expected to give the next instructions to the political leaders, but also to receive information regarding the areas they cover. Rama has so far held several meetings with structures and interest groups in Tirana, Dibër and Fier, while the tour is expected to continue in other regions.

The "Works of Albania" tour is a cycle of meetings launched by Prime Minister Edi Rama, engaging Socialist Party structures, district leaders and mayors to present the balance of projects.

This tour aims to discuss new initiatives and monitor infrastructure works. The tour is considered a pre-campaign that Prime Minister Rama has launched for the 2027 local elections, while in many cases he has linked the candidacy of the current mayors to the fulfillment of their commitments, especially regarding the 'mountain package' project.

Rama has placed emphasis on the government's plans for infrastructure projects and pension increases, while attention will now focus on tourism, which is expected to officially open.
