Antibiotics are essential in fighting bacterial infections and have saved millions of lives, but at the same time they also harm the body's good bacteria.
Invited to the studio of the show "Diagnozë", Dr. Sonila Shala Boriçi, a pediatric pneumo-allergist, emphasized that the indiscriminate use of antibiotics leads to bacterial resistance, significantly reducing their effectiveness in the future.
"Antibiotics, from the word itself, mean against living things, that is, antibiotics kill living things that are bad bacteria, but at the same time they kill good bacteria. Using an unnecessary antibiotic destroys the bioflora that is essential for normal living and the normal development of bodily functions, so in these circumstances we do much greater damage and on the other hand the bacteria that are found in the body are intelligent living things, they have lived on earth since life began on earth and have managed to withstand all trials. In this prism they create their own means of resistance, they adapt and at a second moment when we really need to use an antibiotic, these antibiotics will not work and it will be very difficult to eradicate these bacteria that have created those defense mechanisms and have created that resistance that we were talking about ," the doctor explained to A2CNN.
During the period of respiratory viruses in children, parents are often confused about whether they are dealing with the flu or an allergy. Taking over-the-counter medications may not improve the condition, due to incorrect treatment and lack of an accurate diagnosis. But how can you distinguish between the flu, respiratory infections, and allergies?
" This occurs in the age group of children from zero to five years old. Respiratory infections go hand in hand with allergic problems and we can say that in this age group they accompany each other and it is very often respiratory infections that highlight the possibility of an allergic problem. Especially the viruses that we see now in the winter period, they trigger symptoms, so the viral infection itself serves as a trigger, but also as an alarm signal that we may have an allergic component here. In these cases, if we have repeated such phenomena, then this is a signal for both doctors and parents, if this allergic problem is then identified, of course a preventive prophylactic treatment is started, since prevention is always better than cure ," the doctor added.
