Theft of banking data via text message, expert explains how it happens

Cybersecurity expert Besmir Semanaj labels the fraud scheme with messages sent in the name of the Albanian Post to citizens to steal their banking information as a snishing attack.

He stated that the moment the link is clicked, there may be a virus installed on the mobile phone, or a message requesting certain information, such as name, surname, address and banking details.

According to him, these sites, which are illegal, can obtain our banking information and this debit or credit card can use our data.

" We are dealing with a snishing attack, if the phishing is by email. Snishing is used to send SMS, when they manage to have a list of numbers that are very easy for Albanian citizens to find after the hacking that has occurred."

It's not something that only happens in Albania, we also have such attacks in Austria from time to time. This was the last attack we had in Albania. The entire database of phone numbers may have been sent, in the hope that some of the Albanian citizens would fall prey to this scam.

Once they have the phone numbers they send a message, 99% of them have a link that sends a message. Even though the message looks like it is sent by the Albanian Post, the link has no connection to the post.

The moment you click the link, there may be a virus installed on your mobile phone, or a message asking for some information, such as your name, surname, address, and bank details.

These illegal sites can get our banking information and this debit or credit card can use our data. Once they get our data, they can also make online purchases on not very secure sites.

We must be careful that a large portion of the messages we receive may be from evildoers and miscreants. We must look at the message in more detail.

Like the post office and other state institutions, we do not provide information with a link, they inform you to go to the bank.

In the link, you need to see if it is the URL of the mail page, or a site that claims to obtain data for misuse.

Attacks can also come from the page, if you have made a payment to Amazon, click the link to cancel.

When you initiate contact with the perpetrator, they will attempt to obtain the data via text message. If citizens make a transaction, they should immediately call their banks so that the cash register can be blocked.

"In case we have such a situation, we must inform state institutions so that the reaction is faster ," he told MCN.
