Xhoana Nano, wife of former Prime Minister Fatos Nano, at the farewell ceremony of the historic leader of the Socialists, said that Fatos was much more than a public figure, he was real.
"He hated populism, he believed wholeheartedly in European values, he was disgusted by banality, he was not an ordinary person, he had a big heart. Revenge was a quality he refused to have," said Xhoana Nano in her speech at the ceremony.
Tearfully, she said that Fatos was straightforward and loved this country. “Despite the personal price he had to pay, he wanted to see a European Albania,” she said.
She described today as the darkest day of her life, remembering with love, gratitude and pride the man with whom she shared a quarter of a century of life, dreams, hopes and common challenges.
"Today is the darkest and saddest day of my life, I am saying goodbye to the man with whom I spent a quarter of a century of my life, I am connected by many, many shared dreams, hopes and disappointments. Today is one of those days that I would never want to live, and this day is like that for our children too."
Here, a quarter of a century ago, I, a very young girl with the intuition of an innocent age, fell in love with Fatos. At the time, I didn't understand why, but now I know: I had fallen in love not just with Fatos as a person, but much more than that.
"I had fallen in love with the vision of a different Albania, completely different from the one we lived in at that time, of an Albania that urgently needed to leave the centuries-old tradition of barbarism and take a different course, civil, modern and European. I will find all of this in Fatos", said Xhoana Nano.
