The elections are over, will SPAK strike now in the political ranks?

From the victory of the SP to Duman's mandate, SPAK at war with time...

Now that the May 11 elections are over and the political dust is settling, one question hangs in the air: Will SPAK strike at the ranks of those in power? After the sensational arrest of Mayor Erion Veliaj, which shook the foundations of the Socialist Party in Tirana, it seems that SPAK took an extended pause, avoiding any major impactful moves during the election campaign.

More than a lack of evidence or files, the signals are clear: SPAK did not want to upset the "balance" of the moment and directly influence the outcome of the elections. But now that the elections are over, some of the political names who emerged as losers are also expected to lose their parliamentary immunity in September. This could bring a new wave of investigations and bans, if SPAK is not stopped by other factors.

Because beyond the politics of the day, a new race is looming on the horizon: the race against time. The mandate of SPAK head Altin Dumani ends in December. So far, the majority has given no signal of any legal change that would allow SPAK prosecutors to run for re-election, or for Dumani to continue for a second term. Against this backdrop of uncertainty, any sensational investigation risks remaining half-baked – or being thwarted by the political calculations that will come after the formation of the new parliament.

The situation becomes even more delicate when we remember that before the elections, the Anti-Corruption Commission, headed by Fatmir Xhafaj, was established by the majority. This commission aimed to amend a series of laws related to independent institutions, including the judiciary. With Xhafaj now back in the Assembly as a deputy, and with his unclear agenda, the possibility of attempting a "reform" of the current justice system cannot be ruled out.

This means that SPAK is not only under pressure to hit the bigwigs, but it is also in a race against time. Some files have been open for a long time and we need to see if they are closed in the end, or if the victory of the mazhroc has "scare" the new justice system. / Pamphlet
