An earthquake has been recorded in the Naples area, causing citizens to take to the streets. Although it was of a not very strong magnitude, 3 on the Richter scale, the biggest panic was that the earthquake fell 2.9 kilometers deep on the slopes of Vesuvius. At the moment, there are no reports of damage to people or property.
The earthquake was clearly felt in the Vesuvius area, where many people took to the streets. The earthquake was also clearly felt in different neighborhoods of Naples such as along Corso Umberto and the central areas of the city. In the seismic observation network of the Vesuvian Observatory there is a clear trace of the event.
Mauro Di Vito, director of the Vesuvian Observatory, explained an hour after the strong shaking, that the volcano was not active and this has scared the citizens more.
""More than Vesuvius, it is an event still connected with the activity of Campi Flegrei. In the area where it happened, there is actually a "regional" rift between Vesuvius and the Phlegraean caldera. In any case, the two volcanoes remain under very strict surveillance," he said.
