A Hamas official has demanded that 6,000 Palestinian men and women imprisoned in Israeli prisons be released in exchange for hostages in Gaza.
The Israeli military said on Monday that 199 people were being held hostage, a higher figure than previously estimated.
Khaled Meshaal, head of Hamas' diaspora office, said the hostages include high-ranking officers from the Gaza Division of the Israel Defense Forces, which is responsible for patrolling around the Gaza Strip.
Today, Hamas released the first video of an Israeli hostage in Gaza. In the video, a girl who says her name is Maya Sham from the town of Shohaam, is abducted while returning from a party in Sderot, near the Strip. She appears receiving treatment after being injured.
" Hello, my name is Maya Sham, I am 21 years old, from Shoham. I was returning early Saturday morning from a party in Sderot and I hurt my hand. They brought me to Gaza and took care of me in a hospital here ", she explains in the recording published in Arabic and summarized by the Israeli newspaper 'Haaretz'.

Dr. James Alvarez, who has been involved in hostage negotiations in the Middle East, said Israel faces a major challenge if it wants to return the hostages alive.
Hamas didn't do this by accident, they realized that Israel has a long and troubled history of hostage-taking and kidnapping and that this would be a very powerful way to get inside Israel's head and throw it off balance. from a tactical perspective ," he said.
Asked if the hostages might have been taken with a view to a possible prisoner exchange, Dr Alvarez said: " It seems like a pretty good bet to me. That's a kind of insurance that Hamas has taken ."
He explained what the hostages will face: " A hostage's job is to survive. It's never easy. The good news about being a hostage, if there is such a thing, is that if they wanted to kill you, they would they had done it until now, so where there is life there is hope ".
Discussing the mechanics of holding the 199 hostages, Dr Alvarez said Hamas had a "huge logistical problem".
" Feed them, house them somewhere they won't be easily found. They're likely to be on the move, perhaps hooded all the time. The bottom line is that kidnapping is largely a psychological challenge to the hostage, but for kidnappers it's more of a physical challenge ," he said.
Meanwhile, today there were also accusations against Iran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Iran and Hezbollah not to "test" in the north of the country after 28 towns were evacuated near the border with Lebanon.
The evacuations in northern Israel follow an increase in clashes between the country's army and Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group backed by Iran. Speaking in Parliament in Jerusalem, Netanyahu also called for the world to come together to defeat Hamas, saying "this war is also your war", as he compared the gunmen to Nazis.
