The former president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he illegally tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia. He will not attend a hearing next week.
Fulton Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee had scheduled hearings for Trump and the 18 others charged in the case for Sept. 6. But a now-released document says Trump will not need to appear at that hearing.
The decision not to appear in person means that the former Republican president will not have to plead "not guilty" in a courtroom. Courts in Georgia have fairly lax rules for allowing television cameras into the courtroom, and the move means Trump will not have to plead to the charges against him on television.
