"They destroyed and burned Smyrna", Erdogan brings back the attacks on

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has brought back the clashes with the Greeks. He made very provocative statements claiming that "the Greeks destroyed and burned Smyrna".

Noting that the month of August closed with the anniversary of a great victory that paved the way for the creation of the last state-owned Republic in Anatolia, Erdogan said the army launched the great offensive on August 26, 1922, under the orders of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

" Fifteen days after the start of the "great attack", the Turkish flags were flying in Smyrna, which had been destroyed and burned by the fleeing enemy. And so we won the war with the battles we fought for 3.5 years against the enemy, who with his treacherous ambitions and his dirty boots polluted our permanent homeland, Anatolia", said the Turkish president.

Thus, Erdogan recalled that the Turkish army opened the way to Izmir by destroying a significant part of the "Greek occupation forces".

Smyrna was a Greek city located at a strategic point on the Aegean coast of Anatolia. Since 1930 this city took the name of Izmir, part of Turkey.
