Accused of suppressing protests and money laundering, the US sanctions 18

The United States has imposed new sanctions on what it calls "the architects of the Iranian regime's brutal repression of peaceful demonstrators," increasing pressure on Tehran amid ongoing tensions.

In an official statement, the US Treasury Department announced that the punitive measures also target shadow banking networks, which, according to Washington, enable Iran's elite to steal and launder revenues generated from the country's natural resources.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stressed that the US strongly supports the Iranian people in their calls for freedom and justice.

" At the direction of President Trump, we are sanctioning key Iranian leaders involved in the suppression of protesters and will use every tool at our disposal to strike back at those behind the regime's repression ," Bessent declared.

According to the Treasury Department, the sanctions list also includes the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, as well as 18 other individuals and entities that play key roles in laundering proceeds from the sales of Iranian oil and petrochemical products to foreign markets.

US authorities emphasize that these measures are intended to limit the Iranian regime's financial resources and send a clear message that human rights violations and financial abuses will not go unpunished.
