Two Italian collaborators returned from Uganda are being treated at Sacco Hospital, while authorities await test results.

Italian health authorities activated the special Ebola protocol at Milan's Sacco hospital after two people returning from Uganda showed suspicious symptoms.

It concerns a 31-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, who arrived at Malpensa airport on Sunday on a flight from Addis Ababa and then returned to the Como area.

According to Lombard authorities, the two are Italian collaborators who had spent three months with Comboni missionaries in Uganda, near the border with Congo, where an Ebola outbreak has been recorded.

During the night, both showed symptoms such as high fever, nausea, vomiting and intestinal problems. The woman also showed neurological symptoms and is in a more serious condition.

They were transported in two separate ambulances to Sacco Hospital, where they were admitted to isolation rooms. Authorities do not rule out the possibility that the woman will be transferred to intensive care.

The test results are expected by this evening.

The Health Advisor for the Lombardy region, Guido Bertolaso, stated that the symptoms could also be related to malaria, as the 33-year-old's daughter had contracted the disease while staying in Africa.

" There is also the possibility of malaria, but Ebola cannot currently be ruled out ," Bertolaso said.

Meanwhile, the family members of the two patients have been placed in preliminary isolation pending test results.

The Italian Ministry of Health has begun verifications of their contacts and travels. If Ebola is confirmed, the patients are expected to be transferred to Rome's Spallanzani hospital, which specializes in treating such cases.

Authorities recall that Ebola is transmitted through bodily fluids and close contacts must remain in isolation for 21 days.
