Instagram post with numbers "86 47" sparks political backlash and legal proceedings in the US
Former FBI Director James Comey is facing formal charges of threatening the life of former US President Donald Trump after an Instagram post he posted last year showed a photo of shells forming the numbers "86 47".
The number "86" is used in American slang to mean "removal" or "elimination," while Comey's opponents, including Trump and administration officials, have interpreted the combination as a reference to the 47th US president.
Comey has denied any threatening intent. In a public response, he stated that he was unaware of the interpretation of the numbers and added: “I remain innocent, I have no fear, and I continue to believe in an independent federal judiciary.”
Current FBI Director Kash Patel, in a press conference, emphasized that Comey, due to his experience, was aware of the consequences of such a publication. He stated that the post “unacceptably encouraged a threat to the life of the president.”
Relations between Trump and Comey have long been strained. Trump fired Comey during his first term, while the FBI was investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Since then, Trump has repeatedly called for his criminal prosecution.
Comey described the case as a continuation of the efforts against him, stressing that the post was simply a photo taken on a beach in North Carolina. He added that he had deleted the post after realizing it could be interpreted differently and stressed his opposition to any form of violence.
US authorities, including the Secret Service, have questioned Comey in connection with the case. Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that threats against the president's life constitute a serious violation of the law and that a grand jury has filed indictments on that basis.
Earlier, a similar case against Comey was dismissed by a federal court on procedural grounds, after it was found that the prosecutor in charge did not have the necessary authorization to file the charges.
The case remains evolving and reflects ongoing political and institutional tensions in the United States.
