Kiev appears to be running into further obstacles on the war front in Ukraine. Russian forces have secured a bridge on the west bank of the Oskil River in Ukraine's eastern Kharkiv region, a Ukrainian official announced. Oskil is said to partly form the "de facto front line", with Ukrainian troops positioned on the west coast and Russian units advancing from the east, The Moscow Times reported.
Kupyansk city official Andrii Besedin told state television that Russian forces were trying to gain a foothold and expand the bridge in the town of Dvorichna, which is already on the right bank of Oskil. He described the situation as "extremely difficult" and warned that Russian troops could use the bridgehead to bypass Ukrainian positions.
Besedin added that Russian troops are now just two kilometers from Kupiansk, a strategically important city that Ukraine retook in 2022 as part of its counteroffensive. He also emphasized that the enemy was continuously conducting offensive operations.
The Russian advance presents new challenges for the defense of Ukraine. Russian leader Vladimir Putin's forces are making their fastest advance in nearly two years, according to The Moscow Times. A breakthrough in the Kupiansk region could jeopardize Ukraine's gains in 2022 after Moscow suffered a major setback.
But Ukraine is also continuing its struggle. According to Russian information, some regions of Russia were attacked by combat drones during the night. According to reports from Russian Telegram channels, the focus was on the Krasnodar region on the Black Sea. A fire broke out in the city of Novorossiysk, which is important because it has a naval base and an oil port. Anti-aircraft fire and explosions were heard over the port city of Anapa. No damage information was provided.
The Defense Ministry in Moscow said 85 enemy combat drones were downed overnight. Such military figures cannot be independently verified. Regarding the geographical scope of the attacks, it was said that the regions of Krasnodar, Voronezh, Belgorod, Tambov, Kursk in the west and south of the country as well as the annexed peninsula of Crimea in the Black Sea were affected. Due to the potential drone threat, airports in Kazan, Nizhnekamsk and Ulyanovsk in the Volga region also temporarily suspended operations.
