A former senior NATO official, Nicholas Williams, said that Joe Biden's decision to lift restrictions on the use of US long-range weapons by Ukraine is important in terms of Kiev's latest efforts to achieve agreement.
Nicholas Williams said the US leader's move was important when it came to positioning Ukraine not to make significant concessions that Russia wants to achieve peace.
" Ukrainians can say it's too late, but it's not too late to influence the final game ," he said.
He went on to say that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's discussion with Vladimir Putin did not show that the Kremlin leader was willing to compromise or willing to go the extra mile to achieve peace and that may have had an impact on this decision today.
Asked what Great Britain would do now, he added that Sir Keir Starmer has held back until now, but that he will have to change his stance.
"Starmer wanted to be restrained and now he will inevitably decide to approve long-range missiles that attack Russian targets near the border ," he said.
Looking at what it means to allow missiles to hit "deep into Russia," he also said Ukraine would target military targets that could have an impact on the border or in battle.
" They will be purely military objectives ", he concluded.
