The tragic balance of the war in Gaza/ 100 UN employees are killed within 1

100 United Nations workers have been killed since the start of the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, announced. This conflict has caused the highest number of deaths of UN staff in such a short time.

Some were killed while waiting in line for bread; others died with their families in their homes, the UN said in a statement on Palestinian refugees.

"I feel depressed. It was confirmed that over 100 colleagues of the agency were killed in 1 month. Parents, teachers, nurses, doctors, support staff. The agency is in mourning, the Palestinians are in mourning, the Israelis are in mourning,” Philippe Lazzarini said on social media platform X.

"They bear witness to what is happening to the people of Gaza. They work for the UN. They and every other civilian in the Gaza Strip... should never have been killed," said Juliette Touma, Director of Communications at the UNRWA agency.

UN staff around the world will observe a minute's silence and flags will be lowered to half-mast on Monday.

Israel blames Hamas for civilian deaths in Gaza, saying Hamas uses the population as human shields and hides weapons and equipment around hospitals, facilities that have been hit during attacks.

Apart from Gaza, the other deadliest conflict for UN aid workers was in Nigeria in 2011, when a suicide bomber attacked its office in Abuja, killing 46 workers.
