Direct talks between the United States and Iran have seen some positive developments. Tehran announced that in the latest round of negotiations, held today in Geneva, an understanding was reached on key principles that could serve as the basis for a future nuclear deal.
According to a statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, following the conclusion of the Omani-mediated talks, the parties have reached a general agreement on a set of guiding principles. He stressed that the atmosphere of the negotiations has been "more constructive" than in the first round and that work will now begin on drafting the texts of the draft agreement, which will be exchanged between the parties before a third round.
"We managed to agree on general guiding principles, on the basis of which we will move forward and begin work on the text of a possible agreement. This does not mean that the agreement will be reached quickly, but the path has begun, " Araghchi told Iranian state media.
The talks focused mainly on Iran's nuclear program, with the US demanding strict limits on uranium enrichment, the transfer of high-enriched uranium and guarantees against the development of nuclear weapons. In return, Tehran is seeking a gradual lifting of economic sanctions and concrete economic benefits.
On the American side, officials have confirmed that progress has been made, but "there are still many details to be discussed." President Donald Trump has been involved "indirectly" and has repeatedly warned that in the absence of a deal, the US could take military action, with the US military presence in the Middle East expanding.
Omani mediators have assessed that "good progress" has been made in identifying common objectives. Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming weeks with the exchange of drafts, while the parties remain far apart on key issues such as the permitted level of enrichment, sanctions and security guarantees.
