Talks between the United States and Iran have begun, taking place in a three-way format with Pakistan acting as a mediator, according to Reuters reports.

The meeting is being held under conditions that are not entirely clear regarding the method of communication between the parties, as it has not been confirmed whether the delegations are in the same room or in separate rooms, with mediation being carried out through Pakistani officials.

Before the negotiations began, the Iranian side set two main conditions for reaching an agreement: an immediate cessation of fighting in Lebanon and the unblocking of Iranian assets frozen abroad. According to Tehran, these elements were part of an initial framework agreement reached earlier this week.

Washington, on the other hand, has taken a more reserved approach. Donald Trump has said that Iran “doesn’t have any strong negotiating cards,” stressing that reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains an immediate priority for the United States. He has also stressed that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is “99% of the issue.”

According to information, the negotiation process is expected to take place in several stages. Initially, separate meetings of the delegations with Pakistani mediators are foreseen, while indirect negotiations may follow, where the parties communicate through mediators while staying in separate premises.

A third phase, possible only in case of progress, could lead to direct talks between delegations, which would be considered an important step towards reducing tensions and reaching an agreement.
