US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is headed to China on a diplomatic trip with high expectations for easing the escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington, which have created concern around the world.
Mr. Blinken is the most senior official to visit China since President Joe Biden took office. This is the first visit in 5 years to China by a US Secretary of State.
However, expectations for any significant progress on the vexing issues facing the planet's two largest economies are slim, as relations between them have been strained in recent years. Disputes and accusations have steadily escalated over a range of issues that have implications for global security and stability.
Mr Blinken arrives in Beijing on Sunday for two days of talks. According to US officials, he is expected to meet with the foreign minister on Sunday and possibly Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday.
The list of disputes and potential points of conflict is long: ranging from trade with Taiwan, the human rights situation in China and Hong Kong, and increased Chinese military activity in the South China Sea, to war of Russia in Ukraine. US officials said after Mr Blinken left Washington on Friday that he would raise each of those issues, although neither side has shown any inclination to back down from their positions.
President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to Mr. Blinken's trip at a meeting last year in Bali.
In February, Mr. Blinken canceled his trip to Beijing after a Chinese spy balloon entered US airspace.
Since then, the US has made continuous efforts to resume dialogue with Beijing despite the tensions. /VOA
