US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to renew US efforts to call for a ceasefire during his visit to the Middle East today.
Blinken will seek to open negotiations in hopes of ending the war in Gaza and curbing the violence currently spreading in Lebanon.
His latest trip to the region will be his eleventh since the October 7 attack. Diplomacy has so far failed to ease the fighting and comes as stakes have risen following Israel's assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
Blinken will hold talks with regional leaders after US envoy Amos Hochstein held talks with Lebanese officials in Beirut.
Hochstein said it was "not enough" for both sides to commit to UN resolution 1701, which ended the latest round of conflict and called for southern Lebanon to be free of any troops.
"We are working with the government of Lebanon, the state of Lebanon, as well as the government of Israel, to reach a formula that ends this conflict once and for all ," he added.
