British helicopters with counter-drone capabilities have begun arriving in Cyprus today, the UK Ministry of Defence confirmed...
Following the drone attack on the British air base RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, which occurred on 1–2 March 2026 and caused limited damage with no casualties, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the deployment of the warship HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer with advanced air defence capabilities, and Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters.
The Wildcat helicopters are armed with Martlet missiles, specialized to shoot down drones, and according to the latest reports, their arrival in Cyprus was completed today. HMS Dragon is expected to arrive in the region in the next few days or next week.
The Ministry of Defence added that four additional Typhoon jets are scheduled to arrive overnight in Qatar, to reinforce the existing British squadron there and support defensive operations in the region.
British aircraft also conducted defensive air patrols over Qatar, Jordan and the Eastern Mediterranean last night.
Prime Minister Starmer has reiterated that the UK will not join the US and Israel in offensive action against Iran, stressing that all military moves are solely defensive to protect British bases, personnel and allies in the region, amid the escalating conflict with Iran.
Earlier, Defense Secretary John Healey visited Cyprus to discuss with local authorities and reinforce protective measures.
