President Volodymyr Zelensky's speech to the Romanian parliament, scheduled for 17:00, has been cancelled. Zelensky is in Bucharest for an official visit at the invitation of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
The press office in the parliament announced that the speech was canceled, but did not provide further information. According to REL, the reason for the cancellation of the speech could be related to "possible interruption" during Zelensky's speech "by MPs with pro-Russian sympathies".
After arriving in Bucharest, Zelensky wrote on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, that "Ukraine is grateful for Romania's support" and "constructive solidarity", which enables both countries to contribute to food security around the world. .
"Romania is a friend who came to our aid in our darkest day and whose support grows stronger with time," he added.
During their meeting, Zelensky and Iohannis signed a bilateral document that recorded agreements on cooperation in key areas for both countries.
Priorities include the security of the Black Sea region, support for Ukraine's peace formula, economic cooperation and simplification of border crossing procedures between the two countries, according to Ukrainska Pravda. Zelensky's visit comes amid ongoing Russian attacks on the port and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine's Odesa region on the border with Romania.
During the night of October 10, Russia launched dozens of drones in the southern region, damaging transport infrastructure, according to Governor Oleh Kiper. Debris from Russian attack drones has been found in Romania at least three times, followed by Bucharest introducing new security measures to protect the civilian population near the Danube River.
While the attacks are not deliberately targeting Romania, the situation is still "unacceptable", Iohannis said on 2 September.
Meanwhile, today a member of the extreme right in the Romanian parliament caused a scandal, as the media call it, after she unveiled a map of greater Romania, while asking Ukraine to return the "stolen territories" to Romania.
"Diana Şoşoacă said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has no business in Romania and took up the Kremlin's rhetoric again, calling Zelenskiy a "Nazi", Romanian media write.
"There is no Moldovan language, only Romanian. This is Romania, it is a holy land, and Zelenski has no business here, to desecrate the Romanian Parliament, to violate the sovereignty of the Romanian people. He is a Nazi. "Zelenski is a Nazi, he has no business in Romania," said the Romanian senator.
