The difficult task of the West to choose the new leader of NATO
Jens Stoltenberg

Finding the successor to the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has been the subject of discussions for more than 2 years. The task is not easy.

NATO expert Jamie Shea states that the potential candidate must have skills in diplomacy, communication and crisis management.

" NATO is a family of 31 democratic countries, which have their own interests and do not always agree. The orchestra does not play itself. It needs a conductor to make it play in harmony and that's why it needs a good diplomat" , said Jamie Shea, former NATO official.

The high-profile names rumored to take the helm of the military alliance are many. The name of Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has been mentioned several times, as well as that of Ingrida Simoni, Prime Minister of Lithuania. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen were not absent.

There are not a few who support a female face, but there has not even been a general secretary from the countries of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

However, the United States will also have their say, given that no decision has been taken against the American will.

What complicates the process is finding consensus among the 31 member countries, especially now that Finland has joined the Alliance.

" There are too many talented people to be potential candidates. Therefore, there is no reason why NATO should not be able to make an orderly transition. It is in NATO's own interest to make such a transition ", said Shea.
