Greek media reports that a trawler from Libya has sunk in international waters in the territories that share Greece with Italy, 47 miles south of the Peloponnese peninsula in its southernmost area of Pylos.
The SOS signal was sent to the number 112 and it was the Italian side that informed the Greek side about the trawler's breakdown.
A Greek coast guard motorboat, merchant ships passing through the area and rescue helicopters immediately arrived in the area.
So far, 104 clandestine migrants have been rescued, while 17 bodies have been pulled out of the water.
The search for others continues, while the exact number of people who were on the sunken trawler is still unknown.
Other auxiliary ships and a frigate of the Greek Navy are also arriving in the area.
It is learned that initially the captain of the trawler refused to ask for help from the Greek coast guard. The rescued will be sent to the port of Kalamata where they will be offered first aid.
