It is said that coincidences will not exist. However, in the same summer in which the blockbuster film about the father of the atomic bomb Robert Oppenheimer triumphed in cinemas, the International Peace Research Institute in Stockholm (Sipria) published a report that raises a disturbing alarm: "The world is sliding towards one of the most dangerous periods in human history, as for the first time since the Cold War and after a period of gradual reduction, the number of nuclear weapons has begun to increase again".
According to official estimates, there are 12,512 nuclear warheads, of which 9,576 are ready for use. Compared to last year, there was an increase of 86 activated heads. China leads with 60, Russia with 12, Pakistan with 5, North Korea with 5 and India with 4. In the statement issued in 2021 by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, they agreed that "nuclear war cannot be won and must not be fought" and should be a distant memory.
Almost 90% of the nuclear warheads are in the possession of the United States and Russia. Moscow has the largest weapons stockpile with a total of 5,977 nuclear bombs, 550 more than the United States. After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and his closest advisers have often raised the possibility of using weapons of mass destruction. The Russian president also suspended his participation in the START treaty, the last of the nuclear arms control agreements signed with Washington.
Another area of concern stems from the analysis of the Chinese arsenal for which there are no official data other than those provided by the US Department of Defense. Beijing has stated in the past that it only wants to be equipped with enough nuclear weapons to guarantee the defense of its national territory. Therefore, the increase in one year from 350 to 410 warheads and the discovery in 2021 through satellite images of the construction of hundreds of new bunkers for intercontinental missiles in the north of the country contradict this statement.
"Relations between the great powers have further deteriorated at a time when humanity and the planet face a number of urgent challenges that can only be solved with international cooperation," commented Stefan Lofven, SIPRI Fellow and former Swedish Prime Minister.
Beyond the usual ritualistic calls for denuclearization and seeing that the trends are in the opposite direction, in the face of an existential threat of this kind one wonders if there is still room in the world's decision-making circle for Oppenheimer's anxious reflections.
In light of the data highlighted by the report and the success of the film centered on the figure of the modern Prometheus, it would be reasonable to expect a relaunch of the initiative in favor of nuclear arms control. Instead, to quote historian Christopher Clark's famous book, like somnambulists we seem to be heading for a catastrophe whose outlines we can see without seeing them. Therefore, the reaction of the spectator seems to be that of someone who has seen a thriller dedicated to sharks and who, after spending several hours of terror, leaves the cinema reassured by the fact that in real life some things could not happen to him. Forgetting that we all live in that movie. / Adapted "Pamphlet" from "Inside Over"
